Call For Artists

Artists interested in collaborating to develop Shape Newham projects were invited to an open Call for Artists, which closed on 21 October 2019.

Thank you to the 65 artists that responded to our Call for Artists. Following shortlisting and interview panels, ten artists have been selected to join the Shape Newham Team and a further ten artists have been highly commended.

Assemblies

Between September and December 2019, there were three assemblies for each Shape Newham region. This provided opportunities for local communities to choose the site of each project and help to shape the brief for each artist/designer.

At assembly one, communities chose the priorities for that town centre and suggested possible sites for projects.

At assembly two, communities voted on preferred sites for the projects.

At assembly three, communities reviewed concept proposals from artists and designers for each of the sites.

Radio Workshops

As part of the project it has been important that we hear the many voices of each local community. This has ensured that a diverse range of voices can contribute to the process and inspire the designers and artists.

Radio Workshops in Summer/Autumn 2019 provided training to residents in radio interviewing techniques enabling them to record their stories. The recordings have been used to create Shape Newham Radio.

Site Suggestions

A shortlist of sites was initially drawn up by the Team in collaboration with Community Neighbourhood Managers, Ward Councillors and Regeneration Officers. Members of the community then had the opportunity to suggest additional sites at assembly one and by email.

Interview Panel

Three residents from each region joined Council Officers and the Design Team to help select the artists for Shape Newham projects. Interviews took place in November 2019. Thank you to all residents who volunteered to be a part of this process.

Design Committee

Each of the three Shape Newham regions has a Design Committee to review and contribute to the design process as projects develop. Following applications, through this website and at assemblies, eight local residents for each region were randomly selected to join each Design Committee.

Co-Production

Co-production workshops were planned for Spring 2020 to train attendees in ceramics, printmaking, painting or casting. This would then enable the opportunity to participate in the actual making of some of the Shape Newham projects.

Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and restrictions on mixing indoors we've had to cancel these workshops indefinitely. We want to thank Local Work Studios for their advice and assistance through the engagement and design phase of the project.

Work Placements

If you are interested please email mail@shapenewham.co.uk. In response to government guidance on office work in relation to Covid-19 the Shape Newham work placements will be postponed until a later date.
